Steps on becoming a sonographer
If you have decided that sonography is the career path you want to take, then these steps will help decide on what to do to get you started.
- How long do you want to finish your education? Do you want to study for a year, two years, or four years? The length of time you need/want to complete your training will affect what school you go to and what program you will end up taking. Certification programs last 12 months, associate degree programs in 24 months, and bachelor degree programs in 4 years.
- What do you want to specialize in? Different colleges offer different programs with a variety of specialties. Almost all sonography schools have a general diagnostic medical sonography program while others offer specialization like cardiac, vascular, pediatric, obstetrics and gynecologic, and neurosonography.
- Where or what school do you want to study in? The CAAHEP website has a complete list of accredited schools that can be filtered according to location, type of program, and specialization. This makes it very easy to see the best places for you to enrol at.
