Is Online Studying Sonography The Next Big Thing?
The advent of the internet movement is one of the greatest accomplishments of this generation. It had made information easily accessible with a click of mouse and communicating over miles and miles of distance as easy as a Skype call. The internet has taken a step even further by making college education available online through a concept called “distance education”. Distance education programs are now being offered by colleges and universities, making tertiary education available to anyone with internet access.

Online Schools in Sonography
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program is one of many tertiary education courses that can now be taken in an online course. Currently, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) has accredited two schools for online education of sonography- Washburn University in Topeka and Jackson College in Jackson. The schools offer certificate, associate, and bachelor degrees in sonography. You can also choose one of specialty, general, cardiac, vascular,or pediatric sonography. In 2015, there are more than 200 schools that are accredited by CAAHEP.
Scholarships
Whether you study online or on campus, there is a variety of scholarships for diagnostic medical sonography students to apply to. Organizations like the SDMS offer scholarships to students who are studying sonography or working sonographers who want to study and earn CME (continuing medical education) units. Most schools also have in-school scholarships offered to students who are studying with them. Even non-academic organizations like General Electric also offer internships and scholarships to sonography students.
Discipline
One of the biggest factors to consider when studying an online course is discipline. Distance education is much more common for tertiary education programs that secondary education because colleges and universities expect students to have developed discipline and responsibility during their earlier education years. It takes discipline and a sense of responsibility in order to set aside time each day for lessons and homework. Instructors usually give deadlines but how and when you accomplish it is completely up to you.

Closing the distance
While only two schools offer online ultrasound programs, they are available to any student who lives in the US and wants to study sonography. Distance education is popular because it closes the gap between the student and the college or university he or she wants to study in. Online programs save a lot of time and effort compared to on-campus education because there are no extra expenses for commute, school lunches, and miscellaneous fees. Your home becomes your school –a plus for people who want to study sonography but are too busy with work and personal responsibilities. |
