Scholarships for Sonography Students
Getting into college can be difficult financially, especially for students who aim to study medical career tracks. Choosing a medical course entails a lot of expenses, especially when it’s time for hospital duty. However, there are plenty of scholarships for sonography students for fresh high school graduates who are finding college applications a little daunting. A lot of organizations and groups offer financial grants to needy students as long as they meet the required criteria (e.g. high school standing, financial capability).
The Top Scholarship in 2017: SDMS
One of the best places to apply for scholarships for sonography students is the SDMS Foundation. The SDMS or the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography Foundation offers allied health scholarships worth $2500 to one or more sonography students with good academic standing in their CAAHEP-accredited diagnostic medical sonography program. This grant can be used for tuition, books, and miscellaneous fees. Like any scholarship, there are deadlines for applications --- the 31st of December for spring and summer semesters and June 30 for fall and winter, respectively.
The International Foundation for Sonography Education and Research
Another great place to apply to is the International Foundation for Sonography Education and Research. This organization offers $500 financial aid to students, given that the program that are enrolled in CAAHEP-accredited. You can apply to this scholarship through the foundation’s website or visiting them in person.
AMVETS Organization
The American Veterans Service organization is one that caters to children or grandchildren of US military members, whether active or veteran. These scholarships are among the most widely funded ones by the government, amounting to $4000 per semester. Not only that, US military members themselves, again, whether active or veteran, are also eligible for these scholarships. Students in ROTC high schools are likewise eligible for a $1000 award for use in college towards an accredited ultrasound technologist program.
There are other scholarships offered by each college or university you apply to; you can inquire from admissions or your adviser. These scholarships vary depending on how big your schools budget is for sonography scholarships in 2017. Ultrasound scholarships are even available for students studying higher education like masteral or doctorate degrees.
You will notice that getting accepted into an accredited program is a requirement of most scholarships for sonography students so you do have to focus on that first. Currently, CAAHEP has accredited programs in more than 200 schools in the United States. You have the choice to apply to a certificate, bachelor, or associate degree, again depending on the requirements for each of those programs. New GED holders are advised to apply for a bachelor degree, while students who have previously taken college-level classes are encouraged to apply to associate degree programs. Certificate programs are the shortest kind, and are offered to students who have already graduated previously from an allied health education program and wish to further expand their training.
